July Temperatures

Preliminary data indicates that the statewide average temperature in July was 79.4°F. This is 2.4°F above the 1981-2010 normal of 77.0°F (Figure 1) and ties this month with 1999 as the 6th warmest July since 1895.

July Precipitation

Delaware’s statewide precipitation for July 2013 averaged 5.53”, which is 1.20” above the 1981-2010 mean of 4.33” (Figure 2). Rainfall across the state was variable and ranged from 10.92” at Rehoboth Beach to just over 2” at Harrington. Several stations had very large daily rainfall totals, an example being the 5.56” of rain that fell at the Dover NWS Cooperative weather station on July 12th.

Statewide Spatial Averages

Data from the Delaware Environmental Observing System (DEOS) shows that the average July temperature anomalies across Delaware were generally positive and small during the month, with some of the largest anomalies found in Northern New Castle County and Chester County, PA (Figure 3).

Average maximum temperature anomalies were generally small and varied in sign across the State, while minimum temperature anomalies were positive and large nearly everywhere. This suggests that much of the July statewide temperature anomaly of 2.4°F was associated with higher nighttime temperatures (Figures 4 and 5).

Precipitation was above normal at most stations across the State. Exceptions were portions of northern New Castle County, and southwestern Kent and northwest Sussex Counties where precipitation was below normal during the month (Figure 6).
