The year 2023 brought the world its warmest year on record. The National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) noted in their December 2023 monthly report that 2023 global temperatures were 1.18°C (2.12°F) above the 20th century average of 13.9°C (57.0°F). This puts 2023 as a record-breaking year for global temperatures which was previously set in 2016.

Of note, the 10 warmest years since global records began have occurred in the last decade (2014-2023). Meanwhile, it has been 47 years since the Earth has had a colder-than-average year, which occurred in 1976.
